Design Conditions for Shell and Tube Condensers


Shell and tube condensers bear internal and external pressure during operation. Safety standards impose strict restrictions on the structure. Design standards shall be selected according to process requirements. Japanese JIS standards are often used in the chemical industry. This article is professionally interpreted by Henan AIX Boiler.

Material balance and heat balance shall be completed before design. Heat transfer calculation shall be carried out after determining the equipment model and service conditions. The final design conditions shall be determined in combination with application specifications and standards.

1. Design Pressure

The design pressure should be reasonably selected based on the operating pressure, usually higher than the actual operating pressure. The common method is to multiply the operating pressure by a safety factor greater than 1. The external pressure design pressure for vacuum equipment is usually 1kg/cm² (gauge pressure). When the difference between operating pressure and design pressure is large, the wall thickness and manufacturing process will be changed accordingly.


2. Design Temperature

When the temperature difference of heat exchange fluid is large, the temperature distribution on the heat transfer wall is complex and the actual wall temperature varies significantly. In engineering, the inlet and outlet temperature of medium is usually taken as the operating temperature, which is used as the basis for design temperature.
