Project Location: Hekinan Thermal Power Station, Aichi Prefecture, Japan
Project Type: Large-scale Ammonia Co-Firing Retrofit for Power Station Boiler
In support of Japan’s national decarbonization goals, AIX Boiler has partnered with JERA Corporation to deliver an ammonia fuel co-firing boiler retrofit solution for Unit 4 (1,000 MW) of the Hekinan Thermal Power Station. This unit serves as the world’s first large-scale commercial demonstration site for ammonia co-firing in a coal-fired power plant.
The project utilizes specialized dual-fuel Burners to achieve 20% ammonia co-firing with pulverized coal. The existing boiler body remains unchanged — only the burners and a new ammonia storage and supply system are added. The entire retrofit was completed within just 6 months, significantly reducing project costs and downtime.
Stable combustion efficiency of 38–40%
NOx emissions below 200 mg/Nm³
20% reduction in SO₂ emissions
Fully compliant with Japan’s strict environmental standards
Intelligent monitoring system for real-time ammonia concentration, pipeline pressure, and automatic ammonia-coal ratio adjustment, ensuring safe and stable operation
Advanced low-temperature insulated storage tanks and corrosion-resistant pipelines utilizing seawater waste heat for ammonia gasification, delivering excellent energy efficiency
This landmark project strongly supports JERA’s low-carbon transformation goals and has received official recognition from Japan’s New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO).
